EU tyre label guide

# EU tyre label guide

## What does the EU tyre label show?

The current EU tyre label shows fuel or energy efficiency from A to E, wet grip from A to E, external rolling noise from A to C plus a dB value, optional severe-snow and ice pictograms, and a QR code to the EPREL record. Use it only after matching the exact vehicle specification: the label does not approve fitment or rate every safety, comfort and wear characteristic.

## What the current EU tyre label shows

Regulation (EU) 2020/740 applies to C1, C2 and C3 tyres placed on the EU market. Its revised label has applied since 1 May 2021 and gives standardized evidence for five fields.

| Label field | What it measures | How to read it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Fuel / energy efficiency** | Rolling resistance under the prescribed test method. | A is the best class and E the lowest. Compare the exact tyre version and tyre class. |
| **Wet grip** | A standardized wet-braking performance index. | A is the best class and E the lowest. It covers one aspect of wet performance, not all wet handling. |
| **External rolling noise** | Pass-by noise outside the vehicle. | The label shows class A, B or C and the measured dB value. It is not a cabin-noise rating. |
| **Snow and ice pictograms** | Whether the tyre passed the applicable severe-snow or ice-grip threshold. | The symbols are qualifications, not a complete winter ranking. |
| **QR code** | A link to the exact model record in EPREL. | Confirm size designation, load and speed index, tyre class and declared ratings. |

## First gate: match the vehicle specification

Before comparing label classes or prices, match the tyre size, load index, speed rating, construction and any XL, run-flat, axle or original-equipment requirement in the vehicle placard, owner manual or manufacturer-approved list. A strong label cannot make an incompatible tyre suitable.

## Budget versus premium: compare evidence, not the price tier

Price and brand tier are not test results. TireFitLab uses the same neutral evidence order for every candidate, whether it is marketed as budget, mid-range or premium.

| Decision gate | Evidence to compare | Reject or verify when |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Vehicle specification** | Placard, manual or manufacturer-approved tyre list. | The exact size, service description or required construction does not match. |
| **Wet-road baseline** | Wet-grip class for the exact SKU, then a like-for-like independent test where available. | A rating is borrowed from another size, load version or product generation. |
| **Energy use** | Fuel-efficiency class for the exact SKU. | A claimed saving has no standardized class or comparable test behind it. |
| **External noise** | A-C class and measured dB value. | The value is presented as proof of a quiet cabin. |
| **Unlabelled performance** | Like-for-like tests of dry braking, aquaplaning, handling, wear, comfort and cabin noise. | The needed characteristic is not tested; treat it as unknown rather than inferred from price. |
| **Total cost** | Purchase, fitting and expected replacements divided by documented usable distance. | Mileage is assumed without a relevant warranty, comparable test or your own records. |

## A five-step neutral shortlist

- Write down the exact required size, service description and construction before shopping.
- Filter out candidates that do not meet those mandatory specifications.
- Compare EPREL records for the exact remaining versions, not just the model family name.
- Prioritize label fields for your use, then check missing characteristics in independent like-for-like tests.
- Choose on verified performance and total cost, not solely on brand tier.

## What the label does not prove

The label is a standardized comparison aid, not a complete tyre test or vehicle approval. It does not by itself establish:

- dry braking, cornering or steering response;
- aquaplaning resistance or every aspect of wet handling;
- tread life, abrasion or usable mileage;
- ride comfort or noise inside the vehicle;
- real-world fuel or EV range change on a particular vehicle;
- wheel compatibility, physical clearance, legal fitment or manufacturer approval.

*Editorial boundary: this is TireFitLab’s evidence-ordering method, not a claim that budget and premium tyres are equivalent. Where comparable evidence is missing, the result is unknown.*

## EU tyre-label sources reviewed

Regulatory facts and label fields were checked against current European Commission guidance, the consolidated regulation and the public EPREL tyre database. The buying sequence is TireFitLab editorial methodology.
