# Rim width and tire fitment guide

## What rim width is compatible with my tire size?

Nominal tire width can narrow the search, but it cannot approve a tire-to-rim combination. Use the chart as a screening estimate only, then confirm the approved rim-width range for the exact tire make, model, size and service description. Vehicle clearance, wheel offset, load rating and local rules still need separate checks.

## Rim-width screening chart

These editorial ranges group common passenger-car section widths by J-rim width. They are deliberately labelled as screening estimates: two tires with the same nominal width can have different approved rim ranges.

## What makes a rim width approved?

Approval belongs to the exact tire specification, not to the section-width number by itself. ETRTO says only approved rim sizes should be used; Michelin likewise directs owners to the manufacturer rim-width range for the tire. The current manufacturer data sheet is therefore the final tire-to-rim reference.

## How to verify a combination

- Identify the complete tire specification, including make, model, size, load index and speed symbol.
- Find the approved rim-width range in the current tire manufacturer data sheet or fitment tool.
- Confirm wheel diameter, bead-seat width, load rating, offset, centre bore and bolt pattern.
- Verify strut, brake, fender and full-lock clearance on the exact vehicle and trim; ask a qualified tire professional when documentation is unclear.

## Width within an approved range still changes behavior

A rim near the narrow end generally gives a more curved sidewall and slower steering response; a rim near the wide end gives a straighter sidewall and quicker response. The exact section width, ride and protection change depend on the specific tire construction, so TireFitLab does not apply a universal millimetres-per-half-inch correction.

## This chart does not verify

- manufacturer approval for a particular tire product or load version;
- vehicle, suspension, brake or body clearance;
- wheel strength, offset, centre bore or bolt-pattern compatibility;
- load/speed suitability, inflation pressure or legal approval.

*Safety boundary: a value inside the screening range is not a safe-fit verdict. If the exact tire data sheet does not list the wheel width, do not treat this chart as permission to mount it.*
