# TPMS guide

## What does a TPMS warning light mean?

TPMS warns about significant pressure loss; it does not prove that every tyre is at the correct cold pressure. A steady warning means inspect the tyres and check them with a gauge as soon as it is safe. A flashing-then-steady lamp can indicate a system malfunction. Inflate to the vehicle placard and follow the exact owner-manual reset or relearn procedure.

## Direct and indirect TPMS

NHTSA describes both sensor-based direct systems and indirect systems that interpret wheel-speed or other vehicle signals. Regulations set detection and warning performance; the technology name alone does not prove compliance or capability.

| Feature | Direct TPMS | Indirect TPMS |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **How it works** | Pressure sensors are fitted in or at the wheels and report to the vehicle. | Software estimates pressure loss from wheel-speed and other available vehicle signals. |
| **What it may display** | Some vehicles show pressure and corner, but this is vehicle-specific. | Usually warns without an absolute pressure reading; exact behavior is vehicle-specific. |
| **Service after wheel work** | Replacement sensors must match the vehicle protocol and may need ID registration or relearn. | A new baseline may need calibration after inflation, rotation or tyre work. |
| **Regulatory point** | Can comply when the complete vehicle system meets the applicable performance test. | Can comply when the complete vehicle system meets the applicable performance test; FMVSS 138 does not simply ban indirect technology. |

## What to do when the warning appears

Warning behavior varies by vehicle and market. Use the owner manual for the exact telltale, but keep these evidence-backed actions.

| Lamp behavior | Likely meaning | Action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Steady low-pressure telltale** | At least one monitored tyre is significantly underinflated. | Reduce speed, stop safely, inspect for damage and check every tyre with a gauge. Inflate to the vehicle placard cold pressure. |
| **Lamp comes on in cold weather and later goes out** | Pressure may be marginally low and cross the warning threshold as temperature changes. | Do not dismiss it. Check all tyres cold and correct them to the placard. |
| **Flashes for about 60–90 seconds, then stays on** | On vehicles using the US-standard malfunction behavior, TPMS may not be operating correctly. | Check pressures manually, consult the owner manual and arrange diagnosis. A malfunction lamp does not confirm safe pressure. |

## Reset or relearn without hiding low pressure

There is no universal button, speed or driving-time procedure. EU rules specifically require systems to be designed to avoid reset or recalibration at low pressure.

- Park safely and identify the manufacturer-recommended cold pressures on the vehicle placard or in the owner manual.
- Inspect every fitted tyre and check pressure with a reliable gauge; include the spare if the vehicle instructions require it.
- Correct pressure before initialization. Do not use the sidewall maximum as the normal vehicle setting.
- Follow only the model-specific reset, calibration or sensor-relearn steps in the owner manual; drive only when that procedure instructs you to.
- If the lamp remains on, flashes, or returns, recheck pressure and have the tyre or system diagnosed.

## What TPMS does not replace

A working TPMS is a warning layer, not a complete tyre inspection. It does not replace:

- monthly cold-pressure checks with a gauge, including the spare where applicable;
- inspection for punctures, cuts, bulges, cracking, tread wear and overload;
- the placard or owner-manual pressure specification;
- checking whether the spare is monitored; many systems do not monitor it;
- immediate response to vibration, impact or rapid pressure loss even when no lamp is visible.

## Replacement and winter wheel sets

For direct TPMS, sensors must match the exact vehicle protocol, frequency, valve and registration method; these cannot be selected safely from a simple “315 MHz country / 433 MHz country” rule. Indirect systems may require calibration after wheel or tyre changes. Battery construction, life, serviceability and legal obligations vary, so verify the vehicle manual and approved parts before purchase.

*Safety boundary: TPMS reports pressure-related conditions only. It does not diagnose tyre damage, tread safety, load capacity, wheel fitment or permission to continue driving.*
