Tire tread depth without a universal safety shortcut

# Tire tread depth without a universal safety shortcut

## How should tire tread depth be measured and interpreted?

Measure every tire with a tread-depth gauge at several grooves across the width and at several points around the circumference; record the lowest repeatable reading and inspect the rest of the tire. Wear bars are a reference, not proof that the tire is otherwise serviceable. UN R30 specifies 1.6 mm tread-wear indicators for tires in its scope, while NHTSA uses 2/32 inch in U.S. consumer guidance. Neither creates one worldwide legal or safe threshold. ETRTO says legal requirements vary by country and that no single tread depth is safe for every tire and condition. Check current local law, the exact tire and vehicle instructions, season and condition before deciding whether the tire can remain in service.

## A repeatable tread-depth check

| Step | Evidence to record | What it can establish |
| --- | --- | --- |
| **Prepare** | Vehicle parked safely; debris removed; gauge base and probe clean. | A usable measurement setup, not tire approval. |
| **Measure width** | Multiple main grooves across inner, centre and outer tread. | The lowest zone and possible uneven wear. |
| **Measure circumference** | Repeat at several positions around each tire. | Local wear, flat spotting or inconsistent readings. |
| **Compare positions** | All four wheel positions, axle pairing and prior readings. | Trend and mismatch that may need diagnosis. |
| **Inspect condition** | Cuts, bulges, cracking, exposed material, objects and pressure loss. | Whether depth alone is irrelevant because another defect controls. |

## What 1.6 mm and 2/32 inch mean

UN R30 uses 1.6 mm for the height of tread-wear indicators on covered new passenger-car tires. NHTSA tells U.S. consumers that a tire is unsafe at 2/32 inch and explains the wear-bar and penny references. Those are specific contexts, not a transferable statement about every jurisdiction, vehicle class, groove or seasonal rule. Use the measurement area required by the applicable inspection rule.

## Coin tests are rough screens, not calibrated clearance

A penny, quarter or 20p coin can prompt a closer check, but coin wear, orientation, groove choice and visual judgement make it unsuitable as a precise reading or universal legal test. Use a gauge for a repeatable value and verify the current official inspection method. If a wear bar is flush, escalate rather than assuming other grooves or tire condition pass.

## Wet and winter decisions need more than one number

Water depth, speed, tread design, tire condition, pressure, temperature and surface all affect wet performance. Winter requirements and useful-service guidance also vary by country and product. This page therefore does not label 3 mm as a universal safety threshold or 4 mm as a worldwide winter minimum. Follow current local rules and tire or vehicle documentation, and replace earlier when the required performance or inspection evidence cannot be maintained.

## Do not use these depth shortcuts

- one centre-groove reading represents the whole tire;
- a visible coin edge is legal proof;
- being above a wear bar proves the tire is safe;
- 3 mm has one universal braking meaning;
- 4 mm is the winter law everywhere;
- depth alone clears damage, age, pressure loss or a mismatched set.

## Limits and safety boundary

This guide explains measurement and evidence, not a legal verdict or remaining-life prediction. The lowest applicable local requirement, exact tire and vehicle documentation, full-condition inspection and qualified advice control.
