# Tire delamination: belt separation, tread chunking, and when to scrap

## What is tire delamination and is it dangerous?

Delamination means that parts of a tire structure are separating. A bulge, lifted tread, exposed cords, rapid pressure loss, or a new vibration or thumping noise needs prompt professional assessment. Do not inflate the damaged tire and drive it to a shop; use a suitable spare or roadside assistance.

### Stop using the tire

Do not continue on a tire with a bulge, exposed or damaged cords, tread or sidewall separation, rapid pressure loss, or damage after it was driven flat. Use the spare or roadside assistance.

### Arrange an inspection

Have a trained tire professional inspect any cut, crack, puncture, hard impact, new vibration, noise, or repeated pressure loss before normal driving. An outside visual check cannot rule out hidden internal damage.

### Apply conservative repair limits

USTMA limits repair consideration to a tread-area puncture no larger than 6 mm. The tire must be removed and inspected internally, and the injury channel plus inner liner must both be repaired. Shoulder and sidewall damage are excluded; tire-maker policy still controls.

## What can be identified without dismantling the tire

An outside check can reveal a reason to stop using a tire, but it cannot reliably identify every separated layer or rule out hidden impact, heat or run-flat damage. A ridge, distortion or vibration is not enough for a home diagnosis. Keep the tire out of normal service until a trained tire professional has inspected it, including internally when required.

## Possible contributors, not a remote diagnosis

Layer separation can have more than one cause, and the failed component cannot be confirmed from a webpage or photograph. Preserve the tire and relevant pressure, impact and service information for the inspector or manufacturer.

- Operation while underinflated, overloaded or after a significant pressure loss can generate damaging flex and heat.
- A pothole, kerb strike or other hard impact can damage internal structure without an obvious external cut.
- An incorrect prior repair, bead or mounting damage, ageing, contamination or a manufacturing issue may also contribute.

## What a professional inspection should resolve

The inspection should cover both sidewalls, tread and shoulders, beads and inner liner, the inflation-loss history and any previous repair. The tire maker controls whether a specific condition is repairable. Structural separation, exposed or damaged cords and sidewall or shoulder injuries are not cleared by a tread plug or an outside visual check.

## Reduce avoidable risk

- Use the vehicle placard pressure when tires are cold; do not use the maximum sidewall pressure as the routine target.
- Stay within the vehicle and tire load limits and investigate repeated pressure loss instead of repeatedly topping up.
- After a hard impact, new vibration or run-flat event, arrange an inspection before normal driving.
- Check recalls and follow the exact tire and vehicle manufacturer instructions.
