# Tire flat spots: vibration needs inspection, not a road test

## Can you confirm a temporary or permanent tire flat spot by driving it?

A thump, vibration or a visibly irregular tread area after parking, braking, storage or an impact can have more than one cause. It does not prove a temporary deformation, a skid flat spot, a balance issue or whether the tire may remain in service. NHTSA advises consulting a tire service professional for vibration and other performance concerns; USTMA advises prompt consultation for unusual high, low or smooth tread areas. Record the complete tire-and-wheel condition and have the relevant assembly assessed rather than using speed, warm-up time or a balancer reading as clearance.

## Record the symptom before asking for a diagnosis

## Why a drive or balancer is not a verdict

A symptom changing with temperature, time, speed or a service visit cannot remotely confirm internal condition, tread integrity or cause. A wheel balancer measures the mounted assembly for its procedure; it does not certify that a tire is undamaged or fit for service. ETRTO notes that tire serviceability cannot be accurately predicted and that visual or dynamic changes can be an indication that a tire should be removed from service for assessment. Do not use a prescribed road speed, distance, warm-up time, tread-feel test, abrasion-depth estimate or one balance reading to decide that a vibration is harmless.

## When not to keep testing

Do not use repeated driving as a diagnostic experiment when there is pressure loss, visible damage, a bulge, exposed material, unusual high/low/smooth tread, severe or new vibration, a pull, or another driving-performance change. NHTSA directs drivers with pressure loss, noise, vibration or other tire performance concerns to a tire service professional.
