# Tire hydroplaning speed: evidence and risk guide

## Can one formula predict when a road tire will hydroplane?

No. A road tire has no universal hydroplaning-onset speed that can be calculated from inflation pressure or tread depth alone. Aircraft-derived square-root pressure relationships describe particular controlled conditions; they do not validate a road-speed threshold or unsourced corrections for tread, width or pattern. The exact tire, rim, load, pressure, wear, water depth, surface, temperature, speed and vehicle all matter. Use the vehicle placard, tire inspections, exact-product evidence and lower speed with more following distance in rain.

## Why TireFitLab does not publish a critical-speed formula

Hydroplaning is a dynamic loss of tire-road contact when water cannot be displaced under the operating conditions. Technical literature can use pressure-based relationships inside defined aircraft or test contexts, but transferring one coefficient to passenger-car roads changes the application and omits major variables.

A pressure-only result cannot be repaired by multiplying it by tread-depth, width or pattern factors without matched validation. TireFitLab therefore treats any such number as an unsupported prediction, not a safety threshold.

## Evidence workflow for a wet-road question

## Wet-grip testing is not an onset-speed calculator

UN Regulation No. 117 compares the braking performance of an exact candidate tire with a reference tire under defined track, water, temperature, pressure, load and test conditions, including procedures for new and worn tires. Its wet-grip index is useful product evidence, but it is not a universal hydroplaning speed and must not be converted into one.

## Use the vehicle pressure and inspect the tire

Set cold pressure from the exact vehicle label or owner manual, not the tire sidewall. Do not overinflate to chase a higher calculated threshold. Check pressure regularly and inspect tread, wear and damage; follow the vehicle and tire-maker replacement limits and applicable local rules. Appearance or a single tread reading cannot certify wet-road performance.

## Weather and water change the decision

NHTSA advises driving slowly in rain and increasing following distance because wet roads are harder to control and stop on. Do not enter a flooded road or drive around a barrier: turn around. No tire calculation can establish a safe depth or speed for moving floodwater.

## Vehicle response is not a universal five-step script

Brake, steering, stability-control and drivetrain behavior vary by vehicle and operating state. This page does not prescribe a fixed pedal or steering sequence after grip changes. Reduce exposure before the event, follow the exact owner manual and obtain qualified training or inspection where needed; do not deliberately test the limit on public roads.

## Do not use these shortcuts

- a pressure-only road hydroplaning-speed formula;
- fixed speed corrections for tread depth, nominal width, load or directional pattern;
- wet-braking percentages converted into hydroplaning thresholds;
- one worldwide replacement depth or legal conclusion;
- overinflation as a wet-road performance strategy;
- a universal recovery sequence for every vehicle.

## Limits and safety boundary

This guide explains what evidence is needed; it does not approve a tire, predict an onset speed or replace current weather warnings, the owner manual, manufacturer instructions or qualified inspection. Slow down before standing water, leave more space and avoid flooded roads.
