# Tire noise: a symptom to document, not a remote diagnosis

## Can tire sound identify a failed part or prove the tire is safe?

A hum, drone, thump, rumble or new noise can change with road surface, tire condition, wheel-and-tire assembly, vehicle systems and driving conditions. Sound alone cannot confirm a tread pattern, wheel balance, alignment setting, bearing, internal tire condition or whether the tire may remain in service. Record when the change began, the complete tire-and-wheel condition, placard pressure and any vibration, pull, damage or pressure warning. NHTSA directs drivers with noise, vibration, pressure loss or another performance concern to a tire service professional; USTMA advises prompt consultation for unusual high, low or smooth tread areas.

## Record the condition before asking for a cause

| **Visible uneven, high, low or smooth tread area** | Photograph the area and its position; do not shave, probe or alter the tread to identify a cause. | USTMA advises prompt consultation with a tire dealer for unusual tread areas. |

## What the EU external-noise label can and cannot say

The current EU tire label reports standardized external rolling noise as class A, B or C and a dB value for the exact tire version. It is pass-by noise outside the vehicle, not a cabin-noise rating, diagnostic tool, fitment approval or proof of the source of a new sound.

## When to stop trying to diagnose it by driving

Do not turn repeated driving into a diagnosis where there is pressure loss, visible damage, a bulge, exposed material, an unusual tread area, new or severe vibration, a pull, or another performance change. ETRTO notes that tire serviceability cannot be accurately predicted; visual or dynamic changes can indicate that a tire should be removed from service for assessment.
