# Tire pressure and fuel economy

## How does tire pressure affect fuel economy?

Underinflation increases tire deformation and can raise rolling resistance, fuel use and heat. Set each axle to the vehicle maker’s cold pressure for the approved setup and load; do not add pressure merely to chase a fuel-saving estimate. DOE figures are population-level benchmarks, not predictions of one vehicle’s annual cost, CO2 output or EV range. Measure cold, investigate repeated loss and treat TPMS as a warning rather than a pressure-setting tool.

## Pressure and efficiency workflow

| **Find the controlling value** | Vehicle tire/load label and handbook; axles may differ. | Use the specified cold value for the approved tire and load state. |

## Do not turn these shortcuts into a pressure target

- one fixed fuel percentage for every 0.1 bar or 1 psi;
- a universal annual EUR, fuel, CO2 or EV-range saving;
- raising pressure above the vehicle instruction solely for economy;
- the maximum pressure molded on the sidewall;
- an extinguished TPMS lamp as proof that pressure is correct;
- an EU label class without wet grip, exact specification and vehicle approval.

## What the DOE benchmark means

The U.S. Department of Energy says proper inflation can improve gasoline mileage by 0.6% on average and up to 3%, while average underinflation can reduce mileage by about 0.2% per 1 psi. This is a broad consumer benchmark, not a linear calculator for each tire or vehicle. Starting pressure, affected tires, load, construction, route, speed, temperature and drivetrain change the outcome.

## Use the EU label for comparison

Regulation (EU) 2020/740 assigns an A-to-E fuel-efficiency class from laboratory rolling-resistance measurements and separately reports wet grip and external noise. Compare exact tire variants in the applicable class and keep safety dimensions visible. The regulation notes that real savings and road safety depend heavily on driver behaviour and regular pressure checks.

## Limits of this guide

This page explains evidence and maintenance; it does not calculate savings or approve a pressure. Vehicle labels, handbooks, approved tire data and manufacturer instructions control. Stop normal use and inspect after rapid or repeated loss, visible damage, abnormal heat, vibration or unstable handling.
