# Tire pressure for heavy loads and towing

## Should tire pressure change for a heavy load or towing?

Use a separate laden or towing pressure only when the exact vehicle label or handbook specifies one for that tire and load state. Some vehicles list normal and full-load values; others use one value or give towing instructions elsewhere. Do not add a generic amount per passenger, kilogram or trailer. Confirm the approved tire service description, stay within vehicle, axle, wheel and tire limits, and measure cold before the trip. The tire sidewall maximum is not the vehicle’s recommended pressure.

## The vehicle instruction comes first

Read the Tire and Loading Information label, certification label and owner handbook for the exact vehicle, axle and approved tire. If the tire size, load index, load range or construction differs from the approved setup, do not reuse a generic SL/XL table: obtain the exact tire maker’s load-and-inflation data and confirm the fitment with the vehicle maker or a qualified tire professional.

## Pressure selection workflow

| **Identify the exact setup** | Vehicle, axle, wheel, tire size, service description, SL/XL/LT or other construction, and single/dual use. | Resolve any mismatch with the approved specification before loading or towing. |
| **Define the real load state** | Occupants, cargo, accessories, trailer nose/tongue load and actual axle distribution. | Keep vehicle, axle, hitch, wheel and tire limits separate; the lowest applicable limit controls. |
| **Find the applicable pressure** | The exact label and handbook value for normal, full-load or towing use. | If no alternate value is published, do not invent one. Clarify the instruction with the vehicle maker. |
| **Measure cold** | All road tires and the spare before driving, after the vehicle has stood long enough for a cold reading. | Use an accurate gauge and set front and rear separately when specified. |
| **Inspect before departure** | Tread, visible sidewalls, valves, wheels, repeated pressure loss and any warning lamp. | Do not use pressure adjustment to hide damage, leakage, overloading or an unsuitable tire. |
| **Recheck correctly** | After a load change, temperature change or suspected loss, obtain another cold reading. | Do not bleed a warm tire down to the cold target; investigate unexplained differences. |

## Do not derive pressure from these shortcuts

- a universal front/rear pressure range by vehicle type;
- a fixed pressure increase per passenger, kilogram of cargo or trailer nose load;
- the tire sidewall maximum by itself;
- another vehicle using the same nominal tire size;
- a generic SL-versus-XL percentage or reference pressure without the exact approved tire data;
- a TPMS warning lamp being off.

## SL, XL, LT and load index do not form a universal pressure table

Load index is a capacity code under defined test and application conditions; construction and inflation requirements still matter. An XL marking does not mean “always add pressure,” and the same nominal size can have different service descriptions. Match the complete approved specification and use the vehicle instruction or exact tire-maker data rather than assuming every XL tire uses one pressure.

## Towing adds more than total mass

Trailer nose or tongue load changes axle loading, while passengers and cargo can move the vehicle closer to several limits at once. Use the vehicle’s towing section and the trailer’s separate pressure specification. A tow-vehicle door label does not set trailer pressure, and a trailer placard does not set the tow vehicle.

## Warm pressure is not a new target

Pressure normally changes as tires warm in use and as ambient temperature changes. The published recommendation is normally a cold setting. Do not release air from a warm tire merely because its reading is above the cold value; let it cool and verify again unless the manufacturer gives a different procedure.

## TPMS is a warning system, not a setup tool

A TPMS can warn after meaningful pressure loss or a system fault, but it does not know whether the vehicle is correctly loaded, whether the selected laden value is right, or whether the tire’s service description is approved. Check with a gauge before heavy-load and towing trips even when no warning is shown.

## When to stop and inspect

Do not continue normal use after rapid or repeated pressure loss, a bulge, exposed material, separation, smoke, unusual heat or odor, strong vibration, impact damage or unstable handling. Unload safely and use the specified spare or roadside assistance where needed. Correcting pressure cannot rule out hidden internal damage.
