# Tire rolling resistance: EU label and evidence guide

## What does tire rolling resistance tell you?

Rolling resistance is energy lost as a loaded tire deforms while rolling. A lower laboratory rolling-resistance coefficient can support better vehicle efficiency, but it does not predict one car’s fuel use or EV range by itself. Compare the exact tire variant in the correct class, keep wet grip and load/speed requirements separate, and retain the vehicle maker’s approved size and cold pressure.

## Current EU C1 fuel-efficiency classes

For C1 passenger-car tires, Regulation (EU) 2020/740 assigns the fuel-efficiency class from an aligned laboratory rolling-resistance coefficient (RRC). C2 and C3 tires use different thresholds, so do not transfer this table to light-commercial or heavy-vehicle tires.

## How to compare tires without false precision

- Match the exact size, load index, speed rating and vehicle approval before comparing efficiency.
- Confirm the tire class: C1, C2 and C3 use different RRC bands.
- Compare the fuel-efficiency class together with the separate wet-grip and external-noise results.
- Use the vehicle placard or handbook cold pressure; do not overinflate to chase a lower rolling-resistance estimate.
- Treat price, wear, comfort and seasonal capability as separate evidence rather than inferring them from one label letter.

## What the NHTSA estimate means

NHTSA estimates that a 10% reduction in tire rolling resistance can improve vehicle fuel economy by about 1–2%. This is a population-level estimate, not a one-to-one conversion and not a promise for a particular tire, route or drivetrain.

## What the label cannot predict

A label class alone cannot calculate annual fuel cost, CO2, EV range or stopping distance for one vehicle. Vehicle mass, aerodynamics, speed, temperature, route, load, pressure and driving style all affect the observed result. Wet grip is measured and reported separately.

## Keep pressure and fitment under vehicle control

Underinflation increases deformation and can increase rolling resistance and heat, but the remedy is the vehicle maker’s cold pressure for the approved setup and load. The sidewall maximum is not the operating target. Investigate repeated loss or damage instead of repeatedly topping up a tire.
