# Tire section width effects: evidence and fitment guide

## Does a wider tire automatically give more grip and less efficiency?

No. Nominal section width is one part of a tire size, not a performance score or fitment approval. Tread design, compound, construction, actual dimensions, measuring rim, load, pressure, temperature and surface can change grip, aquaplaning, rolling resistance and noise. Compare only vehicle-approved alternatives, use the exact tire data sheet and applicable label results, and verify wheel and vehicle clearance. Do not predict a fuel, range, braking or aquaplaning change from millimetres of width alone.

**What to do with it:** Round marketing sizes can hide several millimetres of difference.

## What the width number can and cannot tell you

In a size such as 225/45 R17, 225 is the nominal section-width designation in millimetres. It helps identify the size family, but it does not guarantee the mounted tire’s exact maximum width, tread width or contact-patch shape. Those depend on the exact product, approved measuring/mounting rim, load and pressure. Two tires marked 225 can therefore differ physically and perform differently.

## How to compare two approved width options

## Why width-only performance tables fail

Changing nominal width often also changes rim diameter, aspect ratio, construction, tread, compound and approved pressure. Even a controlled width change can alter footprint geometry rather than simply adding contact area. Direction and magnitude therefore require product- and vehicle-level evidence; TireFitLab does not publish universal grip classes, kilograms-per-width limits, litres-per-100-km effects or aquaplaning-speed corrections.

## Rim range and physical clearance remain separate

ETRTO says only approved rim sizes should be used and advises consulting the tire or vehicle maker before changing size, structure, load or speed rating. An exact tire’s approved rim range does not prove clearance: wheel offset, real mounted dimensions, suspension travel, steering lock, brakes, bodywork and wheel load still need verification on the exact vehicle.

## Winter, rain and EV choices

A narrower approved option can be appropriate for some winter packages or efficiency goals, but it is not a universal upgrade. Snow, slush and wet behavior depend on the exact tire, tread depth, marking, conditions and vehicle system; EV range depends on the whole vehicle and tire. Use the manufacturer’s approved package and exact product evidence instead of reducing width by a fixed amount.

## Do not use these shortcuts

- a universal “wider equals more dry grip” ranking;
- a rolling-resistance or fuel-use correction based only on width;
- an aquaplaning-speed correction based only on width;
- vehicle-weight classes assigned to tire widths;
- a fixed winter downsizing step;
- rim-width screening as vehicle or tire approval.
