# Tire tread patterns: sidewall markings control the next step

## How do you identify the mounting and rotation limits of a tire tread pattern?

A broad visual category such as symmetric, directional, asymmetric or block does not establish wet grip, noise, tread life, legality, off-road suitability or a rotation pattern. Read the exact sidewall and vehicle documentation first. ETRTO describes a directional tire as one the manufacturer recommends for one direction of rotation and calls for a clear arrow marking; NHTSA says to use the owner manual for the vehicle-specific rotation frequency and pattern. Where wet grip or rolling sound matters, compare the exact new tire’s documented test or label result under its stated conditions rather than inferring a result from groove shape.

## Identify the controlling information before moving a wheel

## Why a pattern family is not a performance rating

UN Regulation No. 117 measures rolling sound, wet grip and rolling resistance under defined procedures for applicable new tires. Those results are test- and tire-specific. A directional, asymmetric, symmetric or block appearance does not supply a comparable wet-braking result, hydroplaning-onset speed, road-noise level, remaining-life forecast or vehicle approval. Compare the exact size and variant, and keep pressure, load, wear, surface and mounting instructions in view.

## Mounting, rotation and use limits

Follow all visible sidewall markings and the manufacturer’s mounting instructions. NHTSA says some vehicles cannot use a normal rotation plan, including cases with different front and rear sizes, and tells drivers to check the owner manual. Do not reverse-mount, swap or use a tire for a different purpose based solely on an image of its tread. If a wheel is incorrectly mounted, damaged, losing pressure, vibrating or wearing irregularly, have the complete tire-and-wheel assembly assessed before continued use.
