# Tire wear patterns: an inspection clue, not a remote diagnosis

## Can a tread-wear pattern identify the fault and the repair?

A centre, shoulder, feathered, cupped or patchy-looking tread pattern is a reason to inspect a tire, but it does not identify one failed part or approve a repair. NHTSA and USTMA advise checking tire condition, pressure and vehicle instructions, and consulting tire service professionals for pressure loss, noise, vibration or other performance concerns. Record the complete tire-and-wheel condition, then let the vehicle maker and qualified inspection determine the cause and next service.

## Record the condition before choosing a repair

## How to use common wear-pattern names

Names such as centre wear, shoulder wear, one-sided wear, feathering, cupping, scalloping and flat spot describe an appearance. They can help focus an inspection, but they do not prove pressure history, alignment geometry, balance, damping, brake condition, suspension damage or remaining serviceability. ETRTO notes that tire serviceability cannot be accurately predicted and visual or dynamic changes can indicate assessment is needed.

## When to escalate

Stop treating this page as a diagnostic tool when there is pressure loss, visible damage, a bulge, unusual high/low/smooth tread areas, new or severe vibration, pulling, or another performance change. USTMA advises prompt consultation for unusual tread areas; NHTSA advises consulting a tire service professional for pressure loss, noise, vibration and other performance issues.
