# Tire wear rate: measure the tire, not a generic mileage promise

## How can you track tire wear without guessing its remaining life?

There is no reliable universal mileage, millimetres-per-distance rate or replacement date for a tire category. Track the exact tire at repeated points and dates, then compare like with like. Pressure, loading, alignment, balance, rotation, road surface, temperature, driving style, tire construction and vehicle condition can change wear. NHTSA recommends monthly pressure, tread and damage checks; ETRTO notes that grip progressively decreases with wear and that no one minimum depth can define safety for every tire and condition.

## Build an evidence record before estimating wear

## What a UTQG treadwear grade can and cannot tell you

For applicable U.S. passenger tires, UTQG treadwear is a comparative rating from a controlled government test course. It can help compare relative wear performance within that system, but it is not a warranty, a kilometre forecast, remaining-tread calculation, fitment approval or a substitute for the tire maker and vehicle placard. NHTSA says actual use can depart significantly because driving, service, roads and climate differ. It is not the EU tire-label wear metric.

## Replacement and wet-road limits

Wear depth alone does not prove a tire is suitable. ETRTO says road grip progressively decreases as tread wears and that a single minimum depth cannot define safety in all conditions. Treat wear bars and any jurisdiction-specific threshold as prompts to verify the current rule for the vehicle’s use, inspect the full tire condition and follow the stricter applicable manufacturer or legal instruction. Stop and seek professional assessment for exposed casing, bulges, cuts, pressure loss, vibration or other suspected damage.
